We were fortunate enough to have had a pre -glimpse of good snowfall here in Hogsback last week with more snow predicted for this coming weekend. So it seems like we are in for a good snow season and are hoping that our special snow request #letitsnow will become a reality for our #winter #hogsbackcelebrations at the end of the month (27-29 July 2018). Here is some video footage of what it was like when it started to snow.

It is happening again this year, during the #winter #hogsbackcelebrations festivities. We are hoping to welcome many more thick skinned polar bears to come and swim a length through our sub zero snow-pool, and win the coveted #ChillDip T-shirt, only bestowed upon the REALLY BRAVE! The #ChillDip at Kings Lodge has been going since 2012 and has become a firm favourite with quite a few families coming from afar to participate in this sub zero event. One family (the Hack family) has done the chill dip every year since the beginning and are always the first one’s to sign up. They have made it an annual tradition. There are various people who have done 2 or 3 #chilldips so far and even a few local Hogsbackians have been known to join in under (in)voluntary duress!! The outside temperature differs from year to year and so does the pool temperature according to the experienced chill-dippers. We have not done temperature readings of the water previously, but we know that it is extremely COLD!!
SAB and Distell have been sponsors from the start making it possible to have t-shirts printed and for the participants to receive prizes (a nip of old brown sherry and a dumpie of Ice and Ice cold Castle Lite), just what you need after swimming through an icy #snowpool!! The excitement on the day, and the award ceremony afterwards, is worth while making this event a MUST-DO over the weekend of the #winter #hogsbackcelebrations!!! This event is starting at 12h15 on Saturday the 28th, so if you are not a chill-dipper, please come and support the brave-hearts!! There is a R60 entrance fee for the participants. So, book your space immediately by emailing Monique ([email protected]) to make sure that your place in the #snowpool is secured!!! Booking is essential. For more info contact Monique on 083-330 6948
Workshop DescriptionThis intensive workshop is aimed at all, whatever their field of interest may be, who wish to improve the precision and effectiveness of their writing and at the same time gain clarity in their hearts and heads. The workshop starts with a talk on the "Colours of Words". Participants will then do an audio warm-up, listening to poems in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. Everybody will then attempt writing down first jottings with a choice of pictorial stimuli and plenty of support. We then turn the jottings into a free-flowing paragraph or poem, ending with collaborative feedback. Enough time for further editing and refining in a conducive garden forest setting results in a writing experience that is unique and soul-uplifting. Duration 7 – 8 hours Cost R850 p/p includes 2 x tea/ coffee and sandwich lunch plus soft drinks. This workshop must be pre-booked and paid for beforehand. ,Lara is one of our "goo.gl/uNG6onlocals" even if she has chosen to settle down in the Midlands. You never really leave Hogsback. You always leave a part of your soul here in the hearts and minds of those who live here. She will be fondly remembered for her "wild and whimsical" daring act of cycling down the Hogsback pass in the nude. (see https://goo.gl/uNG6on). Maybe we can bring some of that excitement back? So we are extra delighted to have her back here even if it is just for a short while, to perform her current acclaimed recital called "the Resonating Pulse". The recital will take place at 3pm at Back of the Moon on Sunday 23 July. To book you place contact Norma, 0459621017. It includes a glass of Sherry.
Even though our snow was a bit pre-mature, we will be putting on a mellow celebration full of wonder with extra chilled-ness thrown in!! There will be a lot happening in and around the village.

Even though it was bitterly cold during our #AutumnCelebration, we had lots of gluhwine, good cheer and activities to keep us all warm! From the unique music events, to the very successful cooking demos, a lot of fun was had by all those who dared to braved the cold! The children learned how to create their own permaculture garden while the adults attended the very interesting talks by local fundis on topics from permaculture to the history of some of our amazing gardens. As this was our first #autumncelebration, we were still finding our feet and did not quite bargain on the severe cold hampering some of the outdoor activities. Luckily not all the autumn leaves got washed away by the rain, and the garden enthusiasts had a glimpse of the radiant beauty of Hogsback in Autumn. St Patrick on the Hill chapel had a lovely exibition of autumn themed flower arrangements. The celebration dinners, high tea, food pairing, sheep in a barrel and cooking demo catered for all the different foodie tastes and Hogsback is quickly establishing itself as a connoisseur food destination. The #wintercelebration will be even bigger and better, so keep your eyes peeled for more information and go and have a look at the provisional draft programme with more items being addedd daily!
